Curriculum Vitae

Corvin Matei is the Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Stellenbosch University Symphony Orchestra, and the founder and Music Director of the Cape Town Concert Orchestra, South Africa.

Born and educated in Romania he received his Masters from the Bucharest Conservatoire of Music and a PhD from the University of Cape Town. During his studies, he participated at different music festivals in Germany, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, France, Spain and Italy.

After playing flute professionally for more then twenty years, with "G. Enesco" Bucharest Philharmonic Orchestra and Cape Town Symphony Orchestra, Matei has embarked on a conducting career. He attended master classes with Witold Rowitski, Sergiu Celibidache and Laszlo Marosi, and studied conducting with Professor Erich Kluge form the Cologne Conservatoire and Bernhard Gueller.

He started his conducting career when performed both as soloist and conductor with the Cologne Chamber Orchestra during their tour to Southern France.

In South Africa he has conducted the Johannesburg Philharmonic, Cape Philharmonic, Cape Town Concert Orchestra, the Beau Soleil Symphony Orchestra, the University of Stellenbosch Symphony Orchestra, the Cape Sinfonia and the Festival orchestras of the South Africa National Youth and the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival.

Some of the highlights of his career include performing with Pavarotti in South Africa and conducting the legendary Pinchas Zukerman in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Since then he has been conducting all major Romanian orchestras, including the prestigious Bucharest Philharmonic, as well as orchestras in Italy, Ukraine and Bulgaria. At present Corvin Matei has a busy conducting schedule in South Africa and abroad.
